I knew, heading to Dublin on Friday evening, that Lottie the sow was already three days overdue. I missed her first litter arriving in June (we were in Paris, worth it) but I hoped I wouldn’t miss this litter. So when the text came through this morning as I sat on the train trundling home, I wanted to go up to the driver and chivvy him along. I arrived just as piglet number seven arrived, although he was unfortunately stillborn. Over the next hour another four living piglets arrived, as well as two more stillborn. All in all, ten healthy piglets are now cuddled in the straw beside their mother, happy, safe, warm and well-fed. It’s been a very exciting Sunday!
